Even in today’s unpredictable political environment, one pattern has remained relatively reliable: the president’s party performs poorly in midterm and off-year elections. This year’s state elections were no different: Democrats won every statewide race on the ballot, expanded their legislative majorities in New Jersey and Virginia and protected their one-seat majority in the Minnesota Senate. With Democratic U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s victory in the Virginia governor’s race, the state is now controlled by a Democratic trifecta, when one party holds the governorship and both legislative chambers. This brings the party’s total number of trifectas to 16, while Republicans have 23 trifectas and 11 states are governed by divided government.
