2026 GUBERNATORIAL MAP

Overview of Gubernatorial Elections in 2026

The race for governor is on in 36 states this year. Half of those seats are open seats where no incumbent is running. Eight are currently held by Democrats and 10 by Republicans. Of the 18 incumbents running for re-election, eight are Republicans and 10 are Democrats. GeorgiaIowa and Nevada are toss-ups. Democrats are hoping to capitalize on a favorable political environment to win these conservative-leaning states. Democrats are also hopeful about their chances in Ohio, an old battleground state that has only gotten redder in recent years. A strong candidate in former state health director Amy Acton may give the party their best chance in the Buckeye State in years.

Republicans, on the other hand, are hoping to flip Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin, three states that have yet to hold their primaries.
