2026 LEGISLATIVE MAP
Overview of Legislative General Elections in 2026
In 2026, 88 of the 99 legislative chambers in the country are up for election. Coming into the year, Democrats control 16 legislatures, while Republicans hold 27. Three states, Michigan, Minnesota and Pennsylvania, have divided legislatures and will be the focus of this election cycle as both parties try to establish control. In Pennsylvania, Democrats are defending a two-seat majority in the House, while Senate Republicans aren’t much safer in their three-seat majority. While Michigan and Minnesota have yet to hold their primaries, Maine and Nevada are emerging as two more legislative battlegrounds. In Nevada, Democrats are more vulnerable in the Senate, where Republicans need to flip three seats to take a majority. In Maine, Democrats hold both chambers by small margins and Republicans are looking to build on their gains from 2024 to take at least one chamber to break the Democratic trifecta.
Arizona, New Hampshire and Wisconsin, like Michigan and Minnesota, have yet to hold their primaries but are expected to be hotly contested states come November.
