States Push Forward on Battery Recycling and Producer Responsibility
Extended producer responsibility (EPR) legislation on batteries continues to gain momentum in state legislatures as policymakers seek to improve collection, recycling and end-of-life management.
In 2026 states like Kentucky, Maine, Nebraska, Oregon and Wisconsin enacted covered battery stewardship programs, primarily requiring producer-funded collection and recycling systems. Other states, including Florida Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts and Minnesota either considered or are currently considering legislation requiring producers to participate in stewardship organizations. Numerous proposals across the states would also expand EPR concepts to electric vehicle batteries, signaling a broader product trend toward producer-funded battery recycling infrastructure.
