States Take Action to Protect Healthcare Workers

Healthcare workers are five times more likely to experience workplace violence than those in other industries, prompting lawmakers nationwide to introduce legislation to protect them.

These bills tackle the issue in several different ways, with states such as New York enacting legislation to implement violence prevention programs in hospitals and Utah approving a law to protect workers from retaliation for reporting incidents. A West Virginia bill currently awaiting action by Republican Gov. Patrick Morrisey would add the state to the list of over 30 others that classify assaults on healthcare workers as a felony, if enacted. With violence against healthcare workers on the rise, states will continue looking to legislation for possible solutions.
