Right to repair measures are legal protections and policies that ensure people who own products such as electronics, vehicles and appliances, as well as independent repair shops, can access the parts, tools, manuals, diagnostic information and software needed to fix those products without relying solely on the original manufacturer. These laws address barriers like proprietary software locks, limited access to genuine spare parts and restrictions on who can perform repairs, which often lead to higher costs, fewer choices and more waste when devices are replaced instead of repaired. Across the United States, every state has considered right to repair bills, and several have enacted laws requiring manufacturers to share repair resources on fair terms, reflecting bipartisan support for consumer choice, competition, waste reduction and product longevity.
FOCUS will continue to monitor legislation related to Right to Repair in state legislatures across the country.
