States Turn to Wearable Device Privacy

As new technologies emerge, state legislatures are introducing legislation on wearable device privacy to keep pace with a rapidly changing digital landscape.

While some bills address connected devices and emerging technologies more broadly, others specifically target wearable recording devices and the privacy concerns they raise. California, Louisiana, New Jersey and Pennsylvania have all considered legislation related to wearable devices. Recently, California’s governor vetoed a bill that would have required recording indicators on wearable devices, while Louisiana enacted legislation addressing recording conversations without consent using wearable devices. These developments highlight the growing debate over how to balance technological innovation with individual privacy.
