The Texas legislature’s Select Committee on Governmental Oversight is currently studying the feasibility of annexing three New Mexico counties bordering the Lone Star State – Lea, Roosevelt and Eddy.
A resolution filed, but not passed, in the New Mexico legislature this session sought approval for secession, prompting the Texas legislature to study the issue ahead of its upcoming 2027 regular session. New Mexico leaders have called the idea “not a serious proposal.”
